FAQs Disposable Bagasse Dinnerware

Frequently asked questions about disposable bagasse dinnerware

What is sugarcane bagasse made from?

Sugarcane products are made from the fibre that is left behind once juice is extracted from sugarcane. Then, the fibre is mixed with water and pressed into different shapes using high temperature moulds.

How is sugarcane bagasse different from paper products?

Bagasse is more eco-friendly than paper products. Unlike paper plates and bowls, sugarcane tableware doesn’t harm any trees since sugarcane byproducts are used to create disposable tableware. When regular trees are cut down, it can take 20 years to grow back.

Is deforestation involved in the manufacturing of your tableware?

Deforestation is not directly involved in the manufacturing of sugarcane tableware because it only uses leftover fibre after the juicing process.

Are sugarcane bagasse products sturdy?

Yes, sugarcane products are much sturdier than disposable paper or plastic products. They’re also leakproof and great for oily or greasy foods. While plastic and foam products are flimsy and can release toxic chemicals, sugarcane products are 100% food safe.

Are sugarcane bagasse products microwavable?

Yes, it’s safe to use sugarcane plates, bowls, and takeaway containers for reheating food in the microwave and can withstand temperatures up to 220°F.

Are sugarcane takeaway containers fridge and freezer safe?

Yes, our takeaway containers are perfect for storing excess food and even the plates and bowls are safe for food storage in a fridge or freezer.

Can sugarcane plates and bowls be reused?

Yes, even though they are disposable, it’s possible to wipe or wash and reuse plates and bowls if they’re not too dirty. They can even be used multiple times!

Should I wash the tableware before first use?

Our tableware is ready for use when it's received and does not need to be washed to be used.

QUESTIONS ABOUT BAGASSE/SUGARCANE:

Q: What is Bagasse?

Bagasse is bi product of sugar cane fiber which is left after the juice has been extracted from the sugar cane. Bagasse plates and bowls are pressed in a high-heat, high-pressure process. Since sugarcane is renewable plant, its bi product – bagasse is a great raw material to make products including tableware products bowls, plates, clamshells, containers etc.

Q: What are the benefits and unique features of bagasse products?

Bagasse products are 100% biodegradable and compostable. Bagasse products are natural fiber products and it biodegrades in 30-60 days. When bagasse products degrade, they provide natural ingredients back to environment since they are made from natural, organic and renewable materials. Bagasse products are perfect alternatives to petroleum based Styrofoam and plastic products which take thousands of years to degrade.

Also Bagasse products are heat tolerant can even be put in the microwave or the freezer. As with paper, extremely hot food might cause sugarcane to lose some of its strength, but it is one of the best compostable food service materials that can handle hot temperatures.

Bagasse products hold liquids well and they are grease and cut resistant. With very hot liquid, bagasse products may be more likely to loose strength or perspire after a certain period of time.

Are sugarcane (bagasse) products oven safe?

Bagasse products can tolerate heat upto 200 F. So, they are oven safe ONLY up to 200 F. We do not recommend that Bagasse/sugarcane products are to be used in ovens with extremely hot temperature.

QUESTIONS ABOUT BIODEGRADABLE AND COMPOSTABLE:

Q: What does it 'biodegradable' mean?

'Biodegradable' simply means that a product will break down into carbon dioxide, water and biomass within a reasonable amount of time in the natural environment.

Q: What does 'compostable' mean?

'Compostable' products are biodegradable, but with an added benefit: when they break down, they release valuable nutrients into the soil, aiding the growth of trees and plants. These products are commonly made out of renewable resources such as corn, bagasse (sugarcane fiber) or vegetable starch. These products degrade within several months in an industrial composting facility and produce no toxic residues. It is environmentally-preferable to use disposable products that are labeled 'compostable' rather than just 'biodegradable'.

Q: Why do we need biodegradable and compostable products?

There are lots of serious environmental and health concern associated with polystyrene and the danger associated with Styrene (which is also called Styroform), the basic building block of polystyrene. Styrene is used extensively in the manufacture of plastics. Consumers, environmental agencies, government are looking to find alternatives of Sterene; and ready to switch to biodegradable and compostable products due to the following reasons.

Please see the following facts that based on published research:

Environmental Impact (EPA):

• The UN Environmental Program estimates that over a million seabirds, as well as more than 100 thousand marine mammals, die every year from ingesting plastic debris.

• Plastic has a base of oil or natural gas and does not biodegrade in a landfill. You can find plastic waste at the beach, on the ground in the forest and floating in the ocean.

• As of 2010, at least 14 countries have banned, or are considering banning, the use of the plastic shopping bags, including Holland, Kenya and Taiwan. San Francisco and Oakland, in California, ban the use of these bags in specific stores

• The average American office worker uses about 500 disposable cups every year.

• Every year, Americans throw away enough paper and plastic cups, forks, and spoons to circle the equator 300 times.

• Once Styrofoam, for example, breaks down, the tiny polystyrene components start to sink, because they're heavier than water, Moore said. "So it's likely that this styrene pollutant is prevalent throughout the water column and not just at the surface."

• The City of San Francisco determined that it costs 17 cents for them to handle each discarded bag.

• A EPA report on solid waste named the polystyrene manufacturing process as the 5th largest creator of hazardous waste.· The National Bureau of Standards Center for Fire Research identified 57 chemical byproducts released during the combustion of polystyrene foam. The process of making polystyrene pollutes the air and creates large amounts of liquid and solid waste.

• The use of hydrocarbons in polystyrene foam manufacture releases the hydrocarbons into the air at ground level; there, combined with nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight, they form tropospheric ozone -- a serious air pollutant at ground level. According to the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) more than 100 million Americans currently live in areas that fail to meet air quality standards for ozone.

• These products are made with petroleum, a non-sustainable and heavily polluting resource.

Serious Health Concerns:

• Acute health effects are generally irritation of the skin, eyes, and upper respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal effects. Chronic exposure affects the central nervous system showing symptoms such as depression, headache, fatigue, and weakness, and can cause minor effects on kidney function and blood. Styrene is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the EPA and by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

• Toxic chemicals leach out of these products into the food that they contain (especially when heated in a microwave). These chemicals threaten human health and reproductive systems.

• Polystyrene foam is often dumped into the environment as litter. This material is notorious for breaking up into pieces that choke animals and clog their digestive systems.

• styrene used in Styrofoam were labeled as possible carcinogens in a report released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Q: Why are recyclable products not the best green solution to fix all issues?

Recyclable products can be collected and reprocessed to produce new items. Common recyclable materials are: paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, aluminum, and electronic waste. Recycling is very important in diverting waste from landfills and Undoubtedly, recycled products are very good for our environment. Recylced products are focused on where they are coming from vs. biodegradable products are focused on where they are going after use. Recycled products very popular because they truly affect the waste stream by using scrap materials. However, if they are thrown in a landfill the product will not truly degrade under landfill conditions. According to EPA, only 9% products are recycled. So, that shows that biodegradable/ compostable products are equally or more important than recycled products because without using these products we will not be able to address all environmental and human health issues in long run.

Q: Why should we use sustainable paper products vs. wood based paper products?

Most paper disposable paper products are made from virgin wood fiber, which are made from wood. It takes 20 years to grow trees so wood fiber is not a renewable/sustainable resource while fiber product such as bagasse (bioproduct of sugarcane) is a renewable/sustainable resource. It takes only 9 months to grow sugarcane plants.

Q: What does PLA mean?

PLA is polylactic acid which is made from corn starch. This material is made from renewable resources and it is compostable.

Q: How is unique about PLA and how it is different than regular plastic?

PLA is very unique material since it is made from corn and not from petroleum. Regular plastics is made from petroleum while PLA is made from corn based resins which makes PLA non toxic and annually renewable resources. PLA is very environmentally friendly material since it is made from renewable resource – Corn. Plastics products may take upto thousand years to compost while PLA products compost within 3-6 months in a composting system.

Q: Are PLA products microwave and freezer safe?

The PLA clear products are heat resistant to 110 degrees Fahrenheit. So, PLA products are good for cold products. PLA is freezer safe , but PLA is not microwave safe.

Q: Why do you recommend some of your bioplastic products for hot food?

Our cutlery products and coffee lids are made from modified PLA which is called CPLA. PLA products don’t offer high heat tolerance, and they can tolerate only upto 110 F. So, we make our cutlery products including knife, spoon, fork, stirrer, testing spoon and coffee lids etc.from CPLA (modified PLA) . This material tolerance upto 185 F. They can be safely used for hot soup, coffee, and other hot beverages. They are also Compostable.

Q: How long will PLA products take to degrade or compost?

PLA products will take up to 6 months to compost in commercial composting facility. In home composting facility, it may take longer time.

Q: Can PLA products be thrown into the regular trash?

Yes. However, please note that PLA products require certain conditions for composting which includes appropriate amount of heat, moisture and air, etc. Generally, conventional landfills do not fulfill these necessary conditions. If PLA products are thrown into the trash, they may be ended up in the landfill and it may take very long time over there to compost due to lack of appropriate conditions.

Q: Should PLA products be thrown into the recycling bin?

It is not highly recommended to throw into the recycling bin.

Q: What does mean Ingeo™?

We use Ingeo brand to manufacture our PLA line of products. Ingeo is a biopolymer made from polylactide (PLA) that can be derived from plants like corn, soy protein, potatoes etc. Ingeo is generally made from corn; it is brand name of PLA which is produced by US based company called NatureWorks. Ingeo perform much like traditional plastics, but are made from annually renewable resources like corn plants and it is compostable.

Q: Can people use Ingeo corn based plastic if they are allergic to corn?

Yes. Ingeo plastic is a corn-derived plastic, however Ingeo is certified by GeneScan to contain no genetic material. During its high heat manufacturing processing, it eliminates any immunologically reactive contents. Because of this, Ingeo can be safely used by people who are allergic to corn.

Q: Is that concerning fact that Ingeo™ / PLA products harm the food supply available to human lives?

Ingeo products little to no impact food prices or supply. We use NatureWorks' Ingeo resins. Natureworks uses the dextrose made from feed corn to make Ingeo. This source is widely available and very inexpensive in US.

Please see the following facts that are provided by Natureworks regarding Ingeo:

Right now...

• Ingeo is made from dextrose (sugar) that is derived from field corn already grown for many industrial & functional end-uses. In North America, corn has been used first because it is the most economically feasible source of plant starches.

• We use less than 1/20th of 1% (0.05%) of the annual global corn crop today, so there's little to no impact on food prices or supply (1).

• The process does not require corn, we only need a sugar source. This could include sugar beets, sugar cane, wheat and more.

Q: What type of (GM) corn do you use in your products?

We use Ingeo resin made in USA by Nature works. This resin is made from non GM and GM corn which is grown in USA. Ingeo is certified and contains no genetic material Please see the following facts that are provided by Natureworks regarding their GM and source options:

GM & SOURCE OPTIONS:

• Making Ingeo does not require genetically modified (GM) materials.

• Ingeo is certified by GeneScan to contain no genetic material.

• Currently, the corn grown in the U.S. is a mixed stream of GM and conventional corn.

• To address variable global market demands around GM feedstock, NatureWorks offers 3 certified source options.
